Anxiety disorders are a group of mental illnesses that cause people to feel excessively frightened, distressed, or uneasy during situations in which most people would not experience these same feelings. Most of us know someone who struggles with anxiety. Severe anxiety is hard to navigate and many people that have anxiety disorders feel trapped in a life of fear, with constant feelings of impending doom. It can be overwhelming for all involved. Take anxiety disorders seriously! When they are not treated, anxiety disorders can be severely impairing and can negatively affect a person’s personal relationships or ability to work or study and can make regular, daily activities such as shopping, cooking, or going outside incredibly difficult. Everyone experiences some anxiety, such as before taking a test or speaking in front of a group, but this type of anxiety motivates us to prepare to do well. Driving in heavy traffic is a common source of anxiety for many people, but it keeps us alert and cautious to better avoid accidents. A little bit of anxiety or nervousness is normal, however, when intense fear and distress are overwhelming and prevent us from doing everyday things and functioning on a healthy level, an anxiety disorder may be the cause. Symptoms can be emotional, physical, or both, but either way they are manageable! With medication (if needed,) therapy for coping skills, possible trauma recovery, and holistic self-care work (in the areas of spiritual, physical, emotional, intellectual, financial, societal, and familial,) anxiety can be overcome – I’ve seen it time and time again.
